she [ʃi:]1 pronoun(a) (referring to woman, girl) elle;∎ she's tall elle est grande;∎ she's a teacher/an engineer elle est enseignante/ingénieur;∎ she's a very interesting woman c'est une femme très intéressante;∎ SHE can't do it elle? elle ne peut pas le faire;∎ formal if I were she si j'étais elle, si j'étais à sa place;∎ formal she who or whom he loves celle qu'il aime(b) (referring to boat, car, country)∎ she's a fine ship c'est un bateau magnifique;∎ she can do over 120 mph elle fait plus de 150 km à l'heure∎ she's a lovely dog c'est une chienne adorable2 nounⓘ She who must be obeyed Il s'agit d'une expression tirée de She ( Elle), un roman d'aventures publié en 1887 par l'auteur anglais Henry Rider Haggard. Cette expression ("celle à qui l'on doit obéir") y désignait la reine Ayesha, qui régnait sur le royaume de Kôr. Aujourd'hui, on utilise cette phrase sur le mode humoristique à propos de toute femme qui inspire le respect et une certaine crainte, qu'elle soit supérieure hiérarchique, mère ou épouse. On pourra dire par exemple I've got to go into work early tomorrow. She who must be obeyed has called a meeting for 8.30 ("il faut que je sois au travail plus tôt que d'habitude demain, j'ai une réunion avec la patronne à 8h30"). Cette allusion a été popularisée par l'auteur anglais John Mortimer et sa série de romans Rumpole of the Bailey, dans lesquels le héros éponyme utilise cette expression à propos de sa femme. -
